Paterson’s housing is older than almost anything we work on

Paterson is the seat of Passaic County and the third-largest city in New Jersey, founded in 1792 as the country’s first planned industrial city around the 77-foot Great Falls of the Passaic River. The mills brought the housing: brick and wood-frame two- and three-family homes, rowhouses downtown, and larger Victorian houses on the higher ground. Very little of it is modern, and that is the whole story of roofing here. On a house of that age we routinely find three or four layers of shingle, decking that has softened where water has been getting in for years, and original gutter runs that were replaced once, badly, some time in the 1980s.
