Do I need a permit to replace a roof in New Jersey?
Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7(c)1x, replacing the roof covering on a detached one- or two-family house in New Jersey counts as ordinary maintenance, so no construction permit is needed. Attached homes – townhouses and condominiums – are not covered by that exemption and do need one. Permits are issued by your own municipality, and the town pages name the office.
